On December 5th, JC Gallery hosted an in conversation event between artist Michael Pemberton and curator and author Katherine Finerty. Katherine Finerty’s catalogue essay for The Age of Water, “Bodies Above the Waves” drew from contemporary and historical references, including Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Disney’s The Little Mermaid, to explore themes of destruction, rebirth and transformation in Pemberton’s works.

Michael Pemberton (b. UK) is a visual artist based in Paris. Pemberton was educated in Fine Arts at the Chelsea School of Art, London, and furthered his studies at UCLA, Los Angeles, the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford, and the Slade School of Fine Art, University College of London. Over a twenty-year painting career, Pemberton has had group and solo exhibitions in galleries in London, Paris, Los Angeles, Mexico City and Vancouver. His new collection of paintings, The Age of Water, is on view at JC Gallery, Mayfair until 22 December 2023.

Katherine Finerty (b. New York City, lives and works in London) is a Curator, Writer, and Educator. She is currently Project Curator in International Partnerships at Tate. Her independent practice focuses on research-based and socially-engaged practices, translocal identity politics, and global contemporary art.


The Age of Water is on show at JC Gallery, Mayfair from November 10 to December 22.
